Lens disappointment!!

Just wanted to share my disappointment in my Sigma lens I've so far had from new and is only 6 months old bought from Amazon.

Well i noticed the fault at the weekend when doing some still life i had the camera pointing directly down to the ground. Turns out its got a bit of a loose barrel and kept slipping! As the camera tried to auto focus the movement of that was causing the barrel to slip so then the focus would try again only for that to cause the barrel to slip even more!!

the culprit is a Sigma 17-70 mm f2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM

So I've contacted amazon who tried to palm me of on Sigma so told them no chance it was up to them to fix the problem and were then going to exchange it but had a problem with my address so now just sending it back for a full refund :)

Shame is i really like the lens its fast, sharp, not too heavy but don't know whether to buy another and give it a 2nd chance or have you lot got any other recommendations for around the same price which was £340?

I have the same lens here and it doesn't suffer from the issue that you have. If that helps any?
 
I can't really comment as I haven't got it yet but I've done quite a bit of looking around and I've gone for the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 as I've read plenty of good things about it.

What about the Tamron 17-50 non VC- f2.8 throughout the range unlike the Sigma.
Personally I wouldn't buy any Sigma lenses now due to their fundamental quality control issue which they are unable to rectify despite publicly saying a couple of years ago that they were fixing it. I don't have the time nor the inclination to mess about trying different copies or sending back and forward to get calibrated. That time cost is the extra that goes on OEM lenses or well made 3rd party lenses like Tokina.

Only you can decide if you want a 2nd copy of the sigma- plenty here swear by Sigma although there's probably as many that swear at them:lol:
 
Thanks for your suggestions but i think I'm used to the length of the sigma so would have to go to 70 i think but then would be great to have the 2.8 all the way through. I might go and try the tamron out this weekend!

Also why do you say the non vc version and not the vc version?
 
I bought one of those a couple of years ago.

It was awful! Nasty colour cast, no contrast, flared at the drop of a hat. Flat horrible horrible.
Amazon refunded me without question.

I like Sigma lenses - good VFM. But when they're not right, they're really bad.

Currently have a 150-500. It's awesome. But, I had to send the first one back 'cause it wouldn't focus.

Because it's better- they made a hash of the re-design. May well have rectified it now- I tried one when it came out and was disappointed but stabilisation doesn't do much for me at these lengths anyway so was not really an issue- and the fact I had a 17-35 and a 17-50 anyway so was just being nosey:lol:.

Try them both and see.
 
That is a real shame, I've always used the various iterations of the sigma 17-70 (until I went to full frame) and always loved them!

From the 17-70 2.8-4.5 to the latest 17-70 OS (over probably 7 years or so), I've never had a problem, so it sounds like you've got a Friday afternoon lens to me!

I hope you resolve the issue as they're great lenses!
 
I've had lots of Sigma lenses ( 10-22, 150 Macro, 70-200, 300, 30, 24-70), and the only one that I had to choose from a bunch was the 24-70 and that was in Japan, as the one they sold me was front focusing. One of the best lenses I've had was the Tamron 17-50 original, it was MUCH sharper than my Canon 50/1.4 and my mate's Nikon 50/1.4 !!!!
