..just wondering if there is a chart or some genius mathematical equation that gives an idea on lens distances?

what I mean is I did a couple of tests this morning to see how near or far I have to stand to get the same shot and it has miffed me to find that the difference between the same full head to toe shot(5'10 - 6' ish) with a 50mm and a 35mm is nearly 7ft, I thought it would be shorter than that..

Is this filming a scene for an upcoming film? (batman springs to mind but not 100%) Where they brought over loads of american road signs and swaped ours for theirs, instead of shooting over there?
Hence zoomed in looking like america and zoomed out the UK?
