Lens down or laid flat

I have a canvas shoulder bag with padded box and dividers. Is it best to lay the camera flat, or is ok to place lens down.
 
Really dont think it matters. I have mine lens down in the holster, sideways in in the backpack and flat in my shoulder bag. So no 'best way' really, just how you are comfy with.

Thank you. I was worried about the weight of the camera on the lens when I put the bag down on the floor.
 
Well, can I sugest putting one of the foam inserts under the lens? That and the bag padding should ease your concerns! :)
 
My 24-105 is almost permanently attached to my 1D MkIII and spends 100% of the time lens pointing down in a shoulder bag. I have a divider on either side of the lens to give the body support and keep the combo upright.

As has been said, it should be padded if it's proper camera bag so you should be fine, but just take care when you put it down...
 
Depends on the bag. The Kata bag I have takes lenses both ways, sideways and upright. It's padded, but if I was worried, I'd use the spare inserts to give it extra cushion. There's always left over dividers.
 
I've had a 5D2 and a 5D3 body down with a Sigma 150-500 OS fitted in my Tamrac rucksack and not had any problems, even when I've carried it around when riding my scooter for a 40 mile trip. It even had a 7D with 24-105 f4 above it with padding in between them with no problems at all.
 
Thanks everyone, your replies are great advice. Up, down anyway will do, just want to take care of my first dslr.
