right guys i dont have the money to go and buy a 600mm lens even though id love to, so im looking at extensions.
looking on park cameras they have the canon 2x converter but further down the page there's some kenko stuff thats quite a bit cheaper, main question is, are the kenkos as good as the canons or am i better going for a canon one?

also any advice on the different models would be welcome as iv'e only just started looking.

thanks
emma

Looking at the lenses in your 'camera bag', none of them will work with the Canon extender.

right what sort of lenses am i looking at for the extenders to work?

The Canon extenders only fit on a few selected Canon lenses, as the extenders have a protuberance on the front, which goes inside a recess at the rear of the lens. The Kenko converter does not have this protuberance and can be used on just about any lens.

Most Canon cameras will only autofocus with a maximum aperture of f/5.6. A 2x converter doubles the f. number, so an f/2.8 lens without a converter becomes an f/5.6 lens with one. Therefore, to retain autofocus you need a lens having a maximum aperture of f/2.8. There is a trick involving taping over pins on the converter to trick the camera into trying to autofocus if there is enough light for it.

For a Canon extender, your looking at an L prime of 135mm or greater focal length or an L zoom which is 200mm or greater at the long end.

AF works fine with the Canon 1.4x extender and the Canon 70-200L IS F4.
You will lose one stop but with f/5.6 it still produces stunning shots.
However, AF wont work with the 2x converter with the 700L F4 (IS and non IS versions) but it will with the f/2.8 versions of this lens.

looks like i'll be going for the kenko versions then.
thanks for all the help and explenations guys.
as always your help is greatly appreciated.

Don't expect too much, not because it's Kenko but because the lenses you're planning to use it with aren't very good. And a teleconverter will magnify the flaws in an image as well as the image itself.

I'd recommend you try the 1.4x Kenko first. I'm going to guess that you'll find that doesn't give you the results that you want. The 2x TC will give even worse results so, if you don't like the 1.4x you really won't like the 2x.

Don't. On your lenses the loss of IQ and speed will be severe. Better look for an old Sigma 400mm f/5.6 HSM around £140 and that would kind of work wide open.
