Lens fault - please help

I have a Nikon D7000 and am using a Nikon DX AF-S 18-105 1:3.5 - 5.6G ED which came with body from new.
After owning it for only a month or so when I now focus (auto) the image within the view finder shudders whilst it is focusing. It does it about 80% of the time. I can also hear a kind of clunking sound whilst it does it. It makes no difference if VR is selected or not. All shots DO come out in focus! Worried in case it fails all together. Can anyone please give me the technical name for this fault which I can use when i return within Warranty?

VR makes that noise, and shakes the viewfinder. Maybe its not disengaging for some reason.
Are you 100% postitive it does it with the VR button turned off, beacuse everything you have described sound like typical VR operation.

Absolutely agree with the above, just sounds like VR operating normally
 
I've never experienced shuddering in the viewfinder when using VR (except for my 70-300 at 300mm), and while VR kind of hisses I've never noticed any clunks except for when it engages and disengages.

That said I've not had any experience with the OP's lens, but then the OP is saying that it happens regardless of the VR setting.

If, however, the camera is set to continuous autofocus then there can be a series of small clunks as the autofocus re-aquires lock.

Alternatively there could really be a problem with perhaps the AFS motor, or even the focusing element's transport. Without being able to see it it's impossible to tell.

It might be a good idea to take the camera into a dealership somewhere to either confirm it's actually VR operation, or there is indeed a fault with the lens.

Dunno if this is relevant but I had what sounds like the same problem with my Sigma 150-500( though it was fine with IS off)...sent it back to Sigma who repaired the IS system ( can't remember the exact repair) as there was something iffy with the system...been fine since :thumbs:

Just played with camera with VR off and it didnt clunk although sure it has before. Will see over next few days and prove either way!
 
If it shudders in the viewfinder now and didn't do before, I would say it is developing a fault. I have had a few VR lenses, never experienced any shudder in the viewfinder, in fact the image is super stable, as it should be, once the VR has kicked in.
Did you buy it locally? If so, take it back for them to check.

I only have the 105vr and have used a couple of other vr lenses, all of them have had the image wobble/ shudder in the viewfinder when the VR spins up.
 
Definitely sounds like the VR. On my D7000 (with the same lens) I can here it kick in, and then if I take my finger off the shutter release without taking the shot I can here it clunk as it disengages and the image in the viewfinder moves slightly.

I'd say if your shots are coming out fine there isn't too much to worry about. And if it fails you're covered by a 2 year warranty (presuming you've registered the camera and lens on Nikons website)
 
All my VR lenses owned now and past have wobbled ans clunked. It even says it will in the manuals for the lenses. If it doesnt, its not working.
 
Thanks all for advice - to close the loop on this problem, visited the nice staff at Nikon Thailand (glad the elevator worked) last week and put the lens in for repair - VR unit was malfuctioning (10 out of 10 for VR comments) also says on the repair invoice [Change 3-4 G Lens group unit,cover sheet]

Nikon repaired in 3 days and it works fine now.
