Lens filter turning but won't come off

All the advice online is about filters being jammed on lens and not moving. This filter is turning but not screwing off - anyone have any tips?! Don't recall anything drastic happening that could have damaged the filter and warped it.
 
What kind of filter is it? Just wondered if it's in 2 parts, and the part you can turn isn't attached to the threaded section?

Broadly my thoughts......as in is it perhaps a Circular Polarising Filter :thinking:

@dan_yell apologies if I am teaching you how suck eggs.

PS if it is such a filter I surmise you might need a filter wrench place to grip the base of the filter to remove it?

Edit ~ you could of course try using a rubber band wrapped round in the first instance before buying the wrench?

Yes it's a circular PL - I've never had this issue before so it's very annoying! But there may be some egg sucking on the logistics re: the turning that my brain has not computed!!

Those that have never simple :facepalm: moments......................have not lived long enough to appreciate their worth :LOL:

PS nothing photographic.................but in my teens I was rewiring the aquarium thermostat and as was my way I always twisted the wiring cores, after stripping the insulation, in readiness to feed them into the new connector....................I had neglected to unplug it from the mains and to say the least I had a 'shocking surprise' :headbang: such an error never happened again :D

I've never done *that* but I did put a brick bolster through a live mains cable once - it's amazing how much steel 240v can bite out of a blade before the fuse pops.

I have a couple of pairs of good (Knipex) sidecutters that a spartky(!) mate has notched when working live. He keeps a couple of notched pairs for cutting at leisure but needs reliable, unnotched ones for speedy snipping up ladders etc..
 
I keep a pair of filter wrenches for each size lens/filter that I use (only 2 sets of 2). Though in many many years I have not needed them for my own lenses and filters, I have rescued a few other photographers when they have had filter problems. These wrenches aren't very expensive, and they can save the day when they are needed.

When I was about fourteen, a friend was trying to repair an old television and I had the job of "tool hander overer".

He asked for the pointed nose pliers and I handed over the pointed nose pliers. He touched the pliers, accidentally, to the high voltage smoothing capacitor, whereupon there was a loud bang, a bright flash and my friend was blown, literally, to the other end of the room.

Luckily he was shaken but not actually damaged. We both learned two valuable lessons that day: never use uninsulated tools in a high voltage environment and don't rely on untrained assistants!
