I have a Canon 450d. My 2nd one as 1st one broke and I replaced in October. I had a lens filter on old one but not on this one. Bought Lens Hood start of last month but only use it now and again or if its really bright sunshine. Should i get a filter for lens?????

Is that on the kit lens? I would say no, a decent filter will cost around the same amount as the lens!!! Use the lens hood, and be careful, and you'll be fine! I have a couple of filters, I don't really use them but I'm keeping them for times where there's lots of spray/dust, like the beach etc. They can degrade image quality, and if you're not in a situation where you need to take drastic measures to protect the front element, I don't think it's worth it!

Thanks for the advice :)

Did not get a filter in the lens kit. When i used one before (£10 from Jessops) I did find that it affected some of my images as well which is why i stopped using them to be honest.

The Canon Lens Hood was £20 and I only bought it as I was doing a shoot last month in the Hot spell we had and it was to protect against the bright sunlight. I will use it if im on the beach or in a situation where the lens might get damaged.

Love your pics by the way. Very creative :)

The general consensus is that UV filters arnt really worth bothering with, but if you do a lot of landscapes a polarising filter is well worth investing in.

I bought one recently for my 10-22 and I've been experimenting with landscape shots and the improvement is dramatic and I love the effect it gives (more cloud detail, better contrast and saturation).

There's plenty of threads on here about them.

Get a good one though if your gonna get one, no point in putting poor quality ones in front of your lens as poor filters of any type are like shooting through dirty windows!
