Lens for 5d, suggestions please

After good advice on here and talking to my course tutor, I am seriously thinking about purchasing a 5d. I love portraiture so a nice lens is a def and I would need a good walkaround lens - doesn't have to be too zoomy. The crunch is that I am on a limited budget, I could probably get away with £600 / £700 on these two lenses. Obviously, for this money definitely looking at the second hand market. Can anyone point me in the right direction??? Many thanks, Sarah
 
Take a look at the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 complimented by a Canon 70-200mm f4 L which would leave you change from £700.
 
the 24-105 is worth a shout, its fantastically sharp and makes an excellent allrounder/walkabout lens
 
85/1.8 definitely for portraits.

35/2, 50/1.4 good for walkaround. For a zoom, I also recommend the Tamron 28-75/2.8 on a budget.

I'll throw an odd one into the mix as well... Voigtlander 40/2 Ultron SL II if you don't need AF - a very compact pancake.

I have just acquired a 5d and have both these lenses too. Initial impressions are good. They'll cover a decent range and are extremely good value especially when money is tight.
 
Primes are the way to go for portraits, with an exception of 70-200. The options are countless as Canon makes many affordable excellent teles.
For a standard - wide range - perhaps 17-40 + 50mm will be the cheaper combination. or 28-70mm used if you can get a good deal.

35mm f2 or 28mm f1.8, 50mm f1.8 and 85mm f1.8 or 100mm f2. That should get you sorted out within in the budget.
 
Another vote for 85mm f1.8 and a shorter prime here.
 
Hi,

I hated my 85mm F1.8 due to purple fringing, the 24-105 Canon will be far superior to the 85mm in every department except aperture of course, ok at 2.5 times the price of the 85mm it should be, but it is a superb match for the 5D.

Do both jobs nicely.

Forget about cheap zooms for portraits.

Within your budget I'd go for 35/F2 (Home+street) + 50/F1.8 (environmental portrait) + 85/F1.8 (Classic portrait)
