Lens for 7D - Car photography help - Pictures inside

Good morning fellow photographers,

I am in need of a little help with choosing a lens or two. I have recently bought a Canon 7D body. I will be taking pictures of cars. All pictures will be stills, with the occasional video. Do I need a lens suited to video?

60% of my pictures will be in this range;

25% in this range

And 15% in this range

I have been recommended the Canon EF-S17-55mm f/2.8 IS for my needs. Is this wise?

You could achieve all of those shots with that lens IMHO.

That's what I wanted to hear. I'd much prefer to spend my money on a high quality single lens. Does anyone has any other suggestions?

Is the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS best suited to my needs?

There are some options, search for 17-55 IS on here and see what other people say about Sigma, Tamron and Tokina equivalents.

None have IS though.
 
Yea, I've heard very good reviews about the Tamron. Half the price too!

Do I need IS in the lens if I already have it built into the camera (7D)? Or does it not work like that?

As you can tell, I'm a newbie but I do not want to upgrade in the future.
 
On a crop body, the 17-55 works very well. You may want something a little wider for some of those "up close" frontal shots, but the 7D & 17-55 is a very good combination.

Poah, I don't think I'll need that much range for the pictures I'm taking.

Just out of interest Steve, what lens do you recommend for the wide, close ups? I know the types of pictures youre talking about.

I have a Sigma 10-20, which I had before the 17-55. I used it on photos of my Focus ST when I had it, and also my Cooper S.

I'd be tempted to not buy a 17-55, and instead buy a Canon 10-22 and a Canon 85 F1.8. It gives you more scope to be more creative.
 
Probably to be getting along with the best point is to have the 17-55 (or equivalent - I use a Sigma 18-50).

The pile of glass can come later if the bug sticks but getting a decent general purpose lens would be the best bet to start with.

I shoot cars and recently had work printed in Performance VW magazine and I use the 17-55 90% of the time. If you add a 70-200 to your lens list, those two will suit you well. There are the odd wide shot of interiors where you may struggle but I rarely need to use something wider. For interior shots you may want to consider a Sigma 10-20mm or similar.

Wise words, thank you both. I will buy the C 17-55 for now and then look into the S 10-20 once I have more experince.
 
this is a good thread. i currently have a 15-85mm on my 7d, and was originally looking to buy the 17-55mm but the guy at the shop gave me his sales pitch and got me into buying the 15-85mm.

i also shot cars also so now will sell my 15-85mm and get the 17-55mm plus a 10-22mm and a 70-200mm.
 
Other than perhaps shooting in low light the 15-85 will give you just as good results as the 17-55.

And a bit more at the wider end where you can still use F3.5 anyway :D It might eliminate the need for a wide angle.
