I am thinking of upgrading from my 20D( with a sigma 18-200 and 70-300) to a 7D and 100-400mm L. I would like another lens but most of the budget blown and I think the sigma 18-200 will not do the 7D much justice. Can anyone help with any ideas on a lens to fill this ( 18mm to 100ish )gap. Thank's.

How about the 17-55 or 15-85? Or you could consider a 24-105L? But may leave you a bit short on the wide end.

Bit of a toughie really.

If you're looking to reach 100mm at the long end then the 'better' lenses start around 24mm or 28mm which isn't particularly wide on a crop camera.

If the wide end is your priority something like the 15-85 might be an option.

What sort of budget did you have in mind ?

I you are getting the 100-400 the the Canon 15-85 will cover the rest of the range. A nice lens that covers the main walkabout requirements. Shot this with mine yesterday.

Up to £400 but i could get a kit lens with the 7D but friends do not recomend them or i can manage with the Sigma 18-200mm f3.5-6.3 DC Lens till i can save up.

The 7D comes with a choice of two different "kit" lenses: the 15-85 and the 18-135. I know nothing about the latter, but the 15-85 is excellent and would complement a 100-400L very well.
