Another recommendation!!
Want to take bird pictures. Have been reading up (on here), its really difficult! Was thinking of Nikkor 300 zoom with maybe a TC, was also thinking of a sigma 150-500, but some people on here have said that at the 500 end its not too brilliant, comes out soft!! I have only got £500-£550. Dont mind going SH especially if its from this website. I like going up to places like Titchwell and along the coast. Could you help me decide

I used to have the Sigma 100-300 f4 DG EX APO which was highly recommended by the wildlife tog's when I had one... Should come within your budget (higher end)...

Used it on a D90 & D300's & with both Sigma's 1.4x & 2x apo ex dg tc's...

What was the quality like with the TC's?
Was there enough 'reach' with the 300m.

I sold my "bigma" as it was just HUGE on the body I had at the time and got the Sigma 100-300... Images were good with the 1.4x but had to MF with the 2x... I will try an dig out some images with the 1.4x when I get time....

You could have a look here pixel-peeper which will give you some idea on various lengths etc...

A few taken with it (from my gallery).... Not sure if these were with a tc but will have to dig out a flash drive for some with a tc attached...

No probs - only other advice is if you do go for one then go for the DG version.... Its the Sigma 100-300 f4 EX DG APO IF HSM (to give its full title)
 
How fast do you need the autofocus to be?

I personally would be tempted by an old school second hand 80-200mm f/2.8 from circa 1997, combined with a 2x TC.

Should be do-able with £500
