I have been asked by the promoter who I box for to do some photos for a charity event, I have full access to the ring but unsure which lens would be best ???

I'm thinking the 70-200 2.8 is gonna still be too long ???

Any ideas ?
 
I use 24-105 shooting from a neutral corner. That gives enough reach to get both sides of the ring and I prefer f/4 or smaller to get decent dof. Often find I'm up to 5000 ISO or more to get a decent shutter speed - no flash of course!
 
I'm thinking the 24-70 is should do the trick, my main body is a 1D and my back up is the 5D2 but may leave the 5D2at home, don't think the AF would be up to it, what do you think ?

Good choice of lens, but I'd take the 5D2. You'll easily be using ISO 5000-12800 depending on the light.

Superb AF, just stuck on the 24-70is F4 or the non is 2.8 ?
 
I prefer not to go below f/4 'cause of dof. But this does mean very high ISO and often still having to underexpose to get a decent shutter speed. But if you gey the timing right, when the glove is in contact with jaw, say, then very briefly nothing is moving fast so you can get away with a slower shutter. Boxing shots can actually look good if they're a bit noisy; gives them a sort of gritty, period look.

2.8 should give sufficient DOF from a distance, it works well enough for gigs.

Looking at the UFC the photographers around the cage seem to use 24-70 or wide angle lenses mostly. You see the odd longer lens, they'll be grabbing the tighter, dramatic shots. If using a combination 2 bodies would be more ideal.
