Hi I'm new to this site. This is my first ever thread!! I own a Canon EOS 40D and recently my old all purpose lens a Sigma 18-125 gave up the ghost. I want to replace it with a versitle good quality lens. I've heard the Tamron 18-270 is the one to buy. Any comments or advice would be most welcome.

If you are looking for GOOD quality it will be difficult to get this with a long zoom lens, such as the 18-270.

For optimum quality it's ideal to get a variety of lenses to cover those focal lengths.
Such as;
Canon 10-22
Canon 24-70
Canon 70-200

That's only an example and not a hard rule. These lenses aren't cheap either but there are alternatives such as the 70-300, 17-55, etc, etc.

But the 18-270 is a great lens if you are looking for less to carry and less weight, it has okay lens quality which is great for general shots :) But anything more professional you will require some better lenses :)

PS: Welcome to TP, hope you stay here long and enjoy the forum, I know I have.
Also If you have any problems feel free to make a thread :)
No such thing as a stupid question :) Well only the one you dont ask!

Welcome!
Jamie

Hi Ken and welcome to TP!

As Jamie said the long range zooms will never be as good quality optically as using multiple lenses. However I do have an 18-200mm IS Canon which does spend a lot of time on my camera because it is so convenient. I do have many other lenses for specific subjects, but the 18-200mm is my ideal walkabout.
The beauty of using a Canon lens is that if you shoot in RAW the Canon DPP software recognises the lens and corrects any problems before converting to JPEG.

If you want an all purpose lens I would suggest you go down the Canon route.

I agree with everything above :) Ideal 18-200 or 18-270 ideal for a walkabout lens. But not ideal for specific subjects :)

The Tamron 18-270VC is the best of the bunch when it comes to mid price consumer superzoom lenses.
Obviously it's not perfect but it beats the others and I really enjoyed owning this lens and it nice with my 40D.
Bearing in mind the focal range it covers, it can give you some rather nice results.
The Vibration Control can be a bit slow at kicking in but then it's not a lens for fast past action shots.
In my opinion it's very underrated and often gets over looked but it's a great lens for the price.
Anyone who just wants a superzoom lens for walkabout and doesn't want to spend vast amount of money striving for the sharpest photos, the results are more than adequate.

strangely enough i was after a superzoom to compliment my future prime collection, i did change my mind from a superzoom to two kit lenses, however there is a good deal on a tamron 18-200mm superzoom at jessops for £170 if your interested.
