I guys I have just brought a d3100 with the kit lens and looking for a 50mm lens, what would be the best one value for money in the mid market range?

It won't auto-focus on the D3100, though. Not a massive problem, in my opinion, but it's important to know.

Correct the older D lenses are screw dive requiring the in body motor to auto focus.

The latest 50mm 1.8 G will AF on the D3100, as it is an AF-S lens with the motor in the lens, but at around £180 not the bargain that the D version is.

The other option, and would be my preferred focal length on a crop sensor, is the 35mm f1.8 G, at around £160.
 
Mid range market is a little hard to define but I would take your pick from:

Nikon AFS 50mm 1.8 ~£180 new - Just released, I don't know it performs.

Nikon AFS 50mm 1.4 ~£300 new - Super lens and pretty good value compared to most 1.4's.

Sigma 50mm 1.4 ~ £300 new - Don't know much about these.

Without spending mega money I can't think of much else that will auto focus on your D3100.

If you aren't fixed on 50mm, the Nikon 35mm 1.8 is superb and cheaper than all of the above.

If you can live without auto focus there are a couple of other options.
 
Sigma Lee are good, but if your on a budget ehen the Nikon AFS 50mm 1.8.

Go to Jessops and speak to a lad called phil, or go to the LCE in southampton and speak to paul or sian :-)

OR il take you there lol.
