Lens for Kenya

Hi all,

I am going on Safari soon and I am thinking of buying a 300mm. We already have a Nikon 55-200, however we were told from people who have been before that it could be a bit a short lens. So as I am not intending to spend too much as i dont know how versatile this lens could be in the future I have been looking at offers. My partner has just found this tamron
So I have a few questions?

never used a tamron before I heard they are not as good as nikon (as the price might suggest) but I also heard lots of positive reviews.
Second, I am attracted by this lens cause it is a macro lens as well, now I am sorry it might sound a stupid question but can this lens be used both as a normal zoom and macro? never had a macro before so i couldnt know. If the answer if yes I think we will buy it cause it sounds like a great offers. Lastly does it sounds like a good deal to you, anymore suggestions are very welcomed, thanks

I would stay clear of that tamron. Most users seem disappointed with it's image quality especially at the top end of the zoom. It isn't actually a macro lens either, it just focusses quite close so can be used for some small subjects.

The newer VC (VC = VR in nikon speak) version tamron 70-300 is supposed to be better.

Thanks Adam i would keep that in mind, so in your opinion could be better even to have a look on mpb for a 2nd hand one?

If I were a Nikon user I'd just have to hire a 200-400 f4 for a safari. Actually, if I were a Nikon user I'd probably already own one.
