Lens for Landscape that doubles as a nighttime lens

Can I get the opinion on this lens?

I want a lens for Landscape work, so wide angle, but also possibly be able to use at night for star photos, and as I'm not flush with money, i've been looking at the above lens.

It is wide angle (maybe not wide enough?) and goes to 1.8 so could be good?

Or should I maybe consider a lens that is slighty wider angle (i dont want super wide as i am also looking at some lee filters), but with maybe 2.8 if i cant get 1.8?

Apparently it's a very good lens, but it's an APS-C lens and so is no good for FF and obviously only 27mm wide effectively on crop sensor. So it's wide enough, but not that wide.
 
Are you on a full frame camera as your profile suggests? If so, Nikon 17-35 2.8 could be a good bet, wide, fast, 77mm filter ring so good for normal sized filters, about the same price 2nd hand as a Sigma 18-35 1.8.

Nope, I've now had to amend my profile! I'm on a D7000 not D700.

Basically I'm trying to find a decent landscape lens for my camera that I can use with filters, that'll also double up as a night time lens if possible. I liked the Sigma as it seemed okay and wouldn't break the bank.

If 27mm is wide enough then it's a very good lens.
 
It's quite frankly an awesome lens. It is THE sharpest zoom on APS-C if not of any lens including primes. The range is a bit poor but it is like having a bag full of primes. It's big and heavy though but it's worth it.
 
I always found 27/8mm a bit narrow fo my landscape needs, I used a sigma 17-70mm on crop for years than a tamron 28-75mm on full frame and when I finally switched to a 24-105mm I found the difference on the wide end made a big difference so I'd e looking for something 16mm or wider have you considered the Tamron 11-20mm f2.8 nice and wide for Landscapes fast(ish) for your night time stuff and also excellent for astro stuff if you ever fancy it.

In that case I would suggest the Tokina 11-16 2.8 or the newer 11-20 2.8 if budget allows - again, fast, wide, takes 77mm filters, well built etc.

But f2.8. There are a few choices at f2.8 but if wider apertures are the aim it's either primes or the Sigma zoom.
 
Thanks for all the replies everyone. I get really confused with all the different lenses people mention and the different specs etc :exit:

Whilst I know what I want to be able to do, sometimes all the information I get, blows my mind :runaway:

I know that I want to head down the route of getting filters, and I've found a supplier of Lee Filters near me, so I've been looking in to them, especially a 10 stopper, i was just thinking I should treat myself to a new lens for landscaping etc, as I've had money sitting around from my b'day for 7 months now :bat:however maybe I'm just being stupid.

I've got a 16-85mm that on reflection would make a good landscape lens, and I could/should use that with filters and start to really learn landscape stuff... then whilst it doesnt have a zoom, use a 35mm for star photos as it's sitting at 1.8?

Sometimes I get so worried about committing money to a lens I don't :runaway:

For landscapes I'd put your money away and stick with the 16-85mm until You know what you really want!

Night sky stuff is tricky as you really want as wide and fast as you can get I'd look out for a decent second hand tamron 11-18mm f2.8 as it really is great for night sky's on a crop body and would double up nicely for any ultra wide landscape work.
