I have a Canon 100D and have the standard lens. Would investing in a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II standard lens be any better at taking shots of hopefully the northern lights please?

You'll need a wide lens to get the Nothern Lights in all its glory, such as the Canon 10-22, Tokina 11-16 or the Sigma 10-20. And a tripod.

The Canon 50mm just won't be anywhere near wide enough, especially on a cropped body.

As Jim says, you need something wide, and fast.

f/2.8 as a minimum, faster would be better. Perhaps look at the Samyang 16mm f/2.0. Or look at renting something from Lenses for Hire (other rental companies are available).
