lens for motocross?

Having just bought a new 500D to replace the 400D is stupidly sold, im hoping to get back into motosport photography, namely motocross. The camera came with a basic 70-300mm lens but it isnt the fastest to focus. i was looking at a 2nd hand 55-250
but reviews ive read have said the same about that. So does anyone have any reccomendations? budget is around £200, possibly stretch to £250

You mean you have the 75-300? As the 70-300 focus is pretty good!

The 55-250 IS is very good indeed, especially for it's price, and will be fine for MX.
 
The Canon 70-300IS is a great lens and will be fine for motocross. The 55-250IS is a belter of a lens for the money.
The older 75-300 lenses are not as good as these.
If you want a jump in AF then you need to be looking at lenses that are above your budget

Why is everyone assuming the 70-300 lens it came with is a Canon IS USM? It could easily be a cheaper Canon or even a Sigma or Tamron.

For £250 the best zoom lens you will get is the Canon 70-300 IS USM. If you already have it, your next bet will likely be the Canon 70-200 L (non-IS) at around £350.

I'm not assuming that, which is why I ask if it's the 75-300. Which was given away with older bodies commonly as part of a twin lens kit.
 
But you're (albeit sceptically) assuming the 70-300 he refers to is a decent Canon one. As some of the cheaper, especially third-party ones are no better than a Canon 75-300.
Anyway let's find out what lens he actually has, eh? :)
 
Not once did I assume it's the Canon 70-300.

Sorry, I don't know why you're being so pedantic, I only asked the op if it was the Canon 75-300 he might have been referring to in his op (as its a common mistake for the slightly uninitiated) and I was waiting for his answer anyway before you jumped in with your pedantry.

sorry for the confusion on my part, i did mean to put 75-300 canon kit lens, my bad.

A friend as a 70-300 IS USM and i found that brilliant a few years ago, but the cheapest ive seen them is around £500 new!

all your help is much appreciated :)

I'd definitely recommend the Canon 55-250 IS. Have a look at Amazon, they are pretty good. It's far better than the 75-300.
 
I had a 55-250 and honestly the image quality was pretty good. The only thing with it was in low light it was pretty slow and autofocus could be a little slow. But for your budget it's a good choice. If you could stretch to the L glass buy used, autofocus on that is rapid compared.

Have a look at Camerapricebuster site, it's a good site for price ideas.

With regards to the 70-300IS lens, drop Ian (Kerso) on here a PM / add your details to his thread in the traders section for a price, think he's under £400 for a new one. And don't forget about the 2nd hand classifieds on here.
 
if your budget is £200 you could buy yourself a new 55-250. Haveing said that if you could put up with the lens you have for a while longer, and save a bit more you could get yourself a 70-200 f4 second hand 350ish it would be well worth the wait and ideal for what you want.

This weekend will be my first proper outing with the camera so i'll be able to judge if im happy with the 75-300. A friend as said i can borrow his 55-250 IS, although i am liking the sound of owning some L glass!

But you'll have to up your budget I'm afraid...

I'd certainly borrow his 55-250IS lens, it'll give you a good comparison between this and your 75-300.

The 55-250 IS is a great lens for the price and you would definitly get a chunk of change from your budget, however for not a lot of extra saving up the 70-200 f4 would be within reach.
I have a 70-200 f4 L and it's awesome. The IQ is brilliant and even with a 1.4x teleconverter the lens retains AF and will give you an equivalent 280 focal length. I currently have a lens for sale on ebay and if that sells (about 3 hours to go) then I will be putting my 70-200 f4 up for sale to get the funds for a 70-200 2.8 L IS.
 
First outing in 4 years today and i seem to of forgotten what little i used to know!
luckily the sun was shining and there wasnt a cloud in sight :D

Out of 200+ shots i have about 20 that look ok on screen although im yet to see them on my computer. borrowed my friends 70-300 is usm and loved that, he forgot his 55-250, fool!

anyhow i'll post up some shots later on, any feedback will be very much appreciated.
