Lens for Nikon D80

Whats your budget? A 2nd hand 70-300 Nikon is not too expensive.

You should be able to get a used Nikon 70-300G for around £80.00, in fact I think if you look really hard you may get a new one for not much more than that, have a look in the classifieds, I think you'll be suprised. I have the VR version and like you I never thought I would be able to afford one, but I would have gone for the G version in a flash (no pun intended) had I not been lucky enough to get the VR.

I have the earlier Nikon 70-300mm D ED lens on a D80, picked mine up for £120, although I'm looking to upgrade soon.

£300 will get you a minty Nikon 70-300VR...you wont be sorry!!!
