Lens for portrait *sony*

Hi i am after a lens for portraits this will be studio and out side.

I guess i am looking more for zoom then prime.

I got the Sigma 28-105 2.8-4.5 but wanting a bit better now

Any ideas what best to go for?

the tamron 17-50mm f2.8 gets pretty good reviews. useful length on a crop sensor and fast enough to be used in low light/provide shallow dof for portraiture

Do you want something sharper ?
If it is an additional lens then yes a 50mm prime. If it is to replace the sigma then as previously mentioned the Tamron 17-50mm.

Thanks for the replys i am looking for sharper to be honest. How does the sony 28-75 2.8 sound or the cz 16-80 3.5

The cz 16-80 is an excellent walkabout lens but if you're looking to do portraits you might want something faster for shallow dof. I'd say the tam 17-50 f2.8 or the 28-70mm would be better for you.

Depends how you shoot really, if you're in limited space a 17-55 or similar is great, but outdoors I like to go as long as I can

If you are considering the Sony 28-75 then you want to consider the Tamron version. More or less the same but a lot cheaper.

When you go for the 50mm, get the Sony 1.8 rather than the minolta 1.7 as not all copies of the minolta are sharp wide open. The 1.4s are all decent

For full frame, if you can find one (I did) the Minolta 100mm f2 can't be bettered, otherwise the Minolta 1.7 50mm. As for zooms any of those mentioned will do fine.

If you are after a 50mm lens then forget about the Sonys and go for the Sigma 50mm 1.4. Its bigger than the Sony lenses but has the HSM, very fast and almost silent when focusing.
You also get a 3 years warranty from Sigma UK
