Lens for Safari

I'd suggest going for a sigma 150-500mm second hand. Should be able to get for around £450. Will give you a much better reach

I have been on a few in S Africa …… in Jan and Feb, their summer …….. presumably you will do an early morning and a 4'o'clockish game drive
Most of the animals are quite large and the driver usually get quite near to them

Light was always good for me and most of the shots are hand held from the back of an open sided converted Landcruiser or similar …….. moving or still
Try to get a good seat and don't get stuck in the middle ……...

I took both the Nikon 70 300mm f4.5/f5.6 VR zoom and the Nikon 300mm f4, (it is non VR), ……… I used the 300mm prime most of the time but I am sure you will get good results with the zoom, especially at your budget price level, it is a good lens which has VR and is light weight.
My wife took a Canon S95 compact zoom and got some reasonable shots ………. always worth taking some back up on opportunities like game safari's - I took a V1 as well as my DSLR ……. spare batteries and cards

Some recommend the 200mm 400mm Nikon zoom but it is very expensive and heavy

I cannot comment on other brands
