I'm going on my hols soon and am now after buying a lens that will suit for general shots from country landscapes to buildings etc. I know I should have given this consideration when I bought my new camera but tbh I wasn't even going to take it with me - now I can't even think of not taking it as I'm having so much fun using it :)

Anyway back to the lens, I've been looking at this one:
Canon EF-S 55-250mm F4-5.6 IS Zoom Lens

What do you think? Will a tripod be essential for those spur of the moment shots?

A lot of peple use the 55-250 on here and love it and i think it gets good reviews. The 100-300 is a bit older i think and no IS and you are quite long at the short end as opposed to the 55.

There is also the 70-300 IS from canon but its more expensive.

What lens(es) have you already got?
I'd get the 55-250 over the 100-300.
Alternatively, if the 100-300 is £300+, you're not far off the price of a second hand Canon 70-200 F4 or a Sigma 70-200 F2.8, both of which will be better than the ones you've listed.
The Canon 70-300 IS USM is very good as well, and there's one in the classifieds for ~£300.

I'd agree just as a walkabout lens you might find 55m and above you're a bit too close to some of the things you'd want to photograph. I'd think something generally in the focal range 18-70 would be ideal but at least 24/28mm at the short end going 55 and over.

Don't know the Canon lenses too well but if theres something equivalent to the Nikon 18-200 it should be the ideal lens for the flexibility you need.
