Hi, I am in the market for a new lens and I was under the impression that the higher the mm (eg. 200mm) the more a lens zooms in or whatever..

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....1&ssPageName=ADME:B:WNA:GB:1123#ht_1196wt_939

If you take a look at this, it says Macro which I thought meant close up pictures. So does this lens zoom in (for taking pictures of say birds and wild life) or is it for taking pictures of bugs and flowers etc?

Does anyone have any suggestions for a budget lens? I've been looking at the linked one and a Tamron 70-300mm as well as a 18-200mm Tamron one.

Would just like a bit of clarification

Cheers

You are correct in that the higher the 'mm' number, the bigger your subject will appear in your viewfinder (and, indeed, in the final print). The 'macro' designation means that the lens is able to focus very close, so that it can pick up the bugs and flowers, as well as focus on objects further away, such as your birds and wildlife.

So it's a good lens to have? I'd quite like a macro lens as well as I do like to take photos of stuff up close.

I don't really know anything about Sigma.

Yes it is indeed a zoom and the macro meens it has "close up" capability and will in theory focus closer than some other lens in this category min focus distance on this lens is 150mm any lens that has two measurments as in 70-210 is a zoom have a look at dyxum for some reviews of this lens

For bird/wildlife photography you'll need at least 300mm and ideally somewhere in the 400-600mm range (obviously this depends on how large the bird is ). The lens you link to is fairly old and you would be probably be better off looking for one of the newer sigma 70-300 APOs which would give you a bit more range, these tend to come in at just under the £100 mark from what I've seen.

that is indeed the sigma 70-300 apo which is now at £65 + postage and i would guess will end up around £100+ which is quite a bit above your budget in a perfect world you'll need to up your budget a bit if you want something up around 200-300mm mark College Cameras have the tamron 70-300 for £139

i think the lenses you are looking at are old versions - the new one looks like this

APO is a better quality lens - identified by a red circle at the top of the barrel..
