Hi, just got my Nikon D3100 this month, really liking it so far :) But want to start looking and saving for some new lens.

So far I only have the 18-55mm kit lens that comes with the camera, but would like to know if there are any 'must have' lens? From what I have read my next lens should be something like a 50mm prime? But I also understand that the D3100 has a crop sensor? So it makes the 50mm more like 70mm and a 35mm just over 50mm if am right?

So would I be better getting a 50mm or 35mm if that's the case? :thinking:

I'm no expert but have the 35mm and it's a good general purpose lens, particularly for low light and for pictures with blurred backgrounds. The 50mm may be more useful for portraits.
 
Be careful with lenses on the 3100. If I recall correctly, it doesn't have the in-body AF motor, so if you want AF you'll need to get AF-S lenses that have their own motor.

The 35mm f1.8 is an AF-S lens so will AF. The cheap 50mm will not.

As to your question, that depends on what you want to shoot!

I know the AF motor is in the lens for the 3100, but I can still use lens without the AF motor and just manual focus? Played about with manual focus, and it doesn't seem to be to hard with the kit lens. But don't know how hard it will be to use with any other lens?

I just started out with my dslr and am shooting most things just now just to get use to the camera really.

There is a new 50mm with AF-S, but for your camera, the 35mm AF-S will more likely be more usefull.
Easy way to find out is set your kt lens to 35mm and leave it there for a while, then set it to 50mm and see which you prefer.
