Hi

Apparently i have been a good boy and SWMBO has told me to pick out what I want for Xmas

So I will have approx £700 plus my 18-55mm IS and 55-250 IS whichn i can sell and add to the fund

So heres my thinking

All Canon Fit for my 550d

10-20mm ish Wideangle
18-135 ish
and a 150-500 if funds allow else 120-400

I also have a Canon 50mm 1.8 and a Sigma 105mm Macro 2.8

Im pretty new to this but my main focus is Macro but I would also like to try Motorsport and Birds. This is my 1 time opportunity to cover all bases

So given this budget, what lenses would you suggest

Any thoughts appreciated

Would depend on what you think you might want to take pictures of the most; if it was me I would choose what I want to shoot most and then spend as much as I could on a good lens for that.

I would suggest a fast zoom if you are looking at shooting motorsports and as big a zoom as you can afford for birds.
 
IMHO you would be better off buying 1 really good lens than 3 mediocre lenses.

Difficulty being that you don't sound like you've figured out what you like shooting yet so having lots of lenses would help you decide but equally, a naff lens might put you off a particular area.

I have thought about just getting the 100-400L and maybe a lens to take the place of the kit lens such as 24-70 sigma

The 28-135IS lens is a great lens and I found mine a good walkabout focal length lens.

The Canon 10-22mm is a very nice UWA lens, but don't discount the Sigma 10-20mm (not the F3.5) - there are a lot of very happy people with this lens - I'm one of them

The Canon 70-300IS is a great lens and is capable for motorsport - esp if you are just starting out in trying it.

The Canon 70-200 L series are very nice and start from just under £500 new for the F4 version - depending on the track, this can be ideal length or a bit short.

I think i definitely want 400mm minimum as I also would like to try some wildlife as I live near a couple of great nature parks
 
24-70 is really a full frame range and on a crop body you'd be much better off with the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 (non VC version is better) which gives the same field of view as the 24-70 on FF, for me 24mm isn't wide enough for a walkaround lens on a crop body.

The 100-400 has a good following as does the 400mm prime, but don't think you'll have much left for your other lenses you were looking at in your OP.

No, I know, thats why i was thinking along the lines of the Sigma, but a couple of people suggested get 1 decent lens rather than 3 mediocre

I saw a 100-400L go for £700 on here just yesterday
 
Absolutely, generally best advice is to choose the lens / focal length you're after and then to purchase the best lens you can afford, otherwise you'll find at some near point you'd be looking to upgrade it
