Lens Help!

Hi All!

So, I have finally entered the world of a photography business:cuckoo: and have launched the inevitable facebook page “Bethia Anne Photography” ! After 48 hours, I received 105 likes and 5 bookings - which is great!

I take photos of new borns, toddlers, families etc.

I have a canon 450d at the moment with a 1.8 50mm lens, which never comes off my camera, because I love it, and most of my shoots are taken with this, together with a flash mount.

I need advice as to what lens I should purchase that has "reach" for outdoor/forest/wood shots, giving a crisp finish. I wonder if a 55-250 canon or a tamron 70-300 would be a start? Is the IS necessary?

If you like primes you could stick to another one of them like a 85mm f1.8 or a 105mm or something, i'm not sure whats available for canon. Neither the zooms you have mentioned are that great.

Thanks rjbell! Although I love the look of the prime lens - it is unfortunately a little out of my price range?! Perhaps I need to get some more bookings in! :thinking:
 
whats your budget?

The problem I have is that because I have "just started out", I don't really have a huge budget, but wanted to purchase another lens so I have more choice in shoots, especially outdoor location shoots. My nifty fifty works great with new borns who are still (!) but I don't think it's that great for outdoor family photos? Budget would be max £300.00 at the moment, bearing in mind my camera is not worth that much (!) I don't want to go mad! :shrug:
 
Ah I see but you shouldn't be embarrassed (am I thinking the right thing?) walking round with a really expensive lens on a cheap (ish) body, before i had my 7D i used to use my 70-200f4l on my 500d and it was kinda unbalanced but imo better glass is more important that a better body, you'd see a great improvement upgrading your camera body but like you are doing I'd suggest getting a new lens first, here are some other options:

I think you should tell us your marketing secret. Your first stats are phenomenal.

Back to the real world now. As you are running a business, you need to take it seriously and INVEST for the best, to deliver the best quality and keep the customers happy, and to gain more clientele.

The ones to look for are 135L, 85L or 1.8, 100 2.0, 70-200mm f/2.8, and also add a 5D and a backup camera (this is an absolute must - would you tell your camera / battery is dead?)
 
Lol! Thank you for all your suggestions! First off, marketing secret, the networking route is phenomenal as we all know. I had already done a few shoots for friends with babies etc. Once their friends then here/see my page, not only do I have friends liking, but I began to have friends of friends of friends! Also as you will appreciate, just starting out means lower prices, which appeal to the "new mums and dads!". I work full time also, so this is just the beginning for me to see how it goes before I "go serious!".

I thank you for suggesting a back up camera and it is something I need to also think about - perhaps a lens can wait bearing in mind I have had successful shoots with my nifty fifty, and save for a back up camera for now?!
