can someone tell me the difference with a nikon 17-35mm 2.8 lens
on the lens it says
one has swm
one has silent wave motor
is it date of manufacture or country where assembled ????

Deep breath, please try to give as detailed a question as possible. Is this one lens or two? You use the singular lens, but then you use one and one suggesting you're comparing two lenses. Are you saying that you have two 17-35/2.8 lenses in front of you, identical other than that says Silent Wave Motor on the side and the other just has SWM?

But, in any case, SWM is Silent Wave Motor which is Nikon's implementation of an ultrasonic motor. It's not a date code, nor is it a country of manufacture.

The Nikon website will explain exactly what it does.

two lens's
different things written on them
i thought maybe had something to do with the year of manufacture ?

My Google Fu suggests that the "SWM" version is likely to be newer than the "Silent Wave Motor" version.

Uncle Ken gives dates for two examples, one of each lettering style (link), there are also sites that give known or suspected serial number batch dates (link).
