Lens Help

Hi,
I am going to start doing event photography at nightclubs and stuff and i wondered what lens any would recommend. It would be to go on a Canon 40D.

Not much in knowing which lens to use but the camera is one I see alot since I work in a club environment.

Can't wait to see your shots if they are as crazy as mine are, they will be good with lots of women.

Cool! any extra spaces on your photography gig? i love nightclubs and photography

i would go for a lens with a nice wide aperture, telephoto if possible but wide open is a must

You'll be working in confined spaces so you'll need something reasonably wide. The lighting will be poor so you'll need something fast.

Something like the 24mm f/1.4L or the 35mm f/1.4L springs to mind.

Also my budget is £200 for the moment.
24mm f/1.4L or the 35mm f/1.4L are bit too expensive at the moment.

Nifty fifty then (50mm f1.8)......dirt cheap and super sharp. Not wide enough TBH, for "full band" shots,(unless the huddle together ) but great for full face shots. Also good for backstage candids.

It will also be crowd shots so would probably need a wide angle more than anything.

Purdy's currently have the sigma 30mm 1.4 for £234.75 if you can stretch to that. If they have any stock left is another matter.....

I am going to go for a wide and fast as after a couple of gigs i will have made the money back. But i am not willing to pay £1000 for one. I have the canon 100-400mm is and that was expensive enough.

... and only f/4 at the wide end. At 20mm it's f/5.6, which isn't going to be too useful.

If you want wide and fast......how wide? Zoom or prime? The 24-70 f2.8 is great, but I am starting to try out primes. Why not rent and see what you think?

I'm thinking 24mm f1.4 could be great. On a cropped sensor that's like an old-fashioned standard 35mm. That coupled with an 85mm f 1. whatever, could be a good combo but COSTLY!!
