i'm still a bit of a noob when it comes to the whole DSLR camera thing.

i got a 18-55 lens at the moment, i need one that will get a longer zoom but still give a clear pic.

i'm going to the nurburgring in just over a week, so i would like to get some nice pics but gunna need a lens that can get a closer shot.

what size lens would you guys say would be the best, i'm looking at a 55-200 lens, would this be any good ?

thanks Jay

Nikon

That would be fine, but a 70-200 would be better as the lens-quality would be bit better also - but more expensive...
You don't mention a budget here, but I'm going to assume you want to do this as cheaply as possible...maybe a second-hand lens would be an option?

The Green-Hell is surrounded by trees and can be a bit on the dingy side, especially if the light's poor - as it has been this past week here in Germany (I live about an hour from the 'Ring).
If you can afford it, get a lens with a wide maximum aperture - an f/2.8 if you can stretch that far - it'll make it easier to focus on the fast-moving cars/bikes...

55-200 "VR"..or 70-300"VR" if you can afford

400 mm just needs more and more money..:D

i'm looking to spend around £200 if possable, i wouldn't mine second hand aslong as it was in good con :)

i like them pics, they are good.

are them pics taken with a 55-200 lens, if so did you find it gave you a close enough pic from where you was standing

if you want a 70/300 AF-S VR , I bought last it year and it is in mint condition, I would like £295 for, let me know if it helps,

aint really got alot of cash to play with at the moment to be honest mate, looking at £200 tops

I'm sure Jeni will answer the first part of your question, but in regards to the second it depends on how far away you are from the subject really. Sorry if that isn't much help, but if you extend the lens to it's maximum (200mm) and find out how much zoom it gives you when you look through the viewfinder, that's what you'll have to work with.
Otherwise you'll have to consider getting a lens with a larger zoom, maybe a 300/400mm lens, which will probably cost a little more money.

Perhaps the best idea is to get down to your local camera shop with your camera and try out a lens with a similar focal length and decide then if it gets you close enough to the action :)

how about a Sigma 70-300....? not Nikon 300mm class but within your budget

make sure you look at the APO version - much better lens quality

available from OneStopDigital..."here" the ONLY HK Importer I trust

if you want it sooner, look in the UK but this is the APO version you need

The queston is, how close are you going to be to the action? Nikon still do a 70-300 non VR lens f3.5-F5.6 I believe for under £100 (ebay) new from several companies but isn't as fast as an F2.8 lens.

Anyone after one of these.......that price is a bargain for a truly superb lens.
