Lens hood question

Got a Sigma 70-300 DG APO (Nikon) from ebay, but it did not have the lens hood. Is there a big differance between the Sigma hood and a petal type hood? I would prefer the Sigma type hood, so would any 58mm hood fit the lens or do I have to get one specifically for this lens?

The Sigma hood will be optimized for the 70mm focal length... if you get a different hood it might vignette at the wide end (70mm) or not offer the best flare protection.

That said, the OEM lens hood business is a freaking rip-off. I think every lens should come with one, regardless of the price. It costs like £2 to make one...

petal shaped hoods are traditionally used for wider angle lenses to help cut vignetting. As said, try and find one for your lens.

Get the hood designed / recommended for your lens ...

The decision to make is genuine Sigma or 3rd party - if you are going 3rd party lens hood, make sure it is a matt finish inside the hood or you could get some light reflection.

Thanks everyone for the replies, very helpful and insightful, I'll get the Sigma one.
