is there a rule for using lens hoods and sizes to match a lens?

i have a sony lens that didnt come with a hood and was gonna buy one but wasnt sure on sizes.

Any ideas?

thanks

Don't Sony make one specifically for it?

You can get a "screw in" type lens hood (flower/petal shaped) which go by the size of the filter - so if its a 67mm filter thread then you get a 67mm lens hood....

Ebay do them although they are NOT original named hoods ie Canon, Nikon, Sigma etc etc

they do one, but dont think they are cheap and for once was gonna go for a cheaper option.

with size i meant focal length rather than the lens diameter, so wondered which would be best for the length of lens, if that makes sense.

thanks

just had a look on ebay and seen the flower petal, was are the pros and cons of this style hood?

Next question, is would you use a hood on a 50mm lens?

cheers

Problem with using a hood that isn't specified for the lens there is a chance for vignetting. petal lenses are designed so that if fitted to the correct lens you get maximum light cover without vignetting. As to would I use a hood on a 50mm, yes if I'm shooting outside in bright sunlight.

Yes, I would. With a zoom, a hood is more for protection than anything, as it can only ever be optimum at the shortest focal length, but with a prime you can make it optimum.

Ideally, it should be as big as possible without intruding in the picture. With a 50m lens on a crop format camera, that will make it quite long, like a couple of inches. Petal hoods are best because when you look through them from the lens end, they actaully appear rectangular so can be made to fit the outline of the frame exactly. Plus they are cheaper to make and stronger, and can be reversed for storage.

thats what i thought, thats what i presumed with vignetting, will have a look at sizes.

cheers

If its the Sony 50mm f/1.8, the front element is so recessed, you don't need a hood.
