Lens hood

I am hiring a lens 24-70 F2.8, to have a practice with over the next two weeks. It comes with a lens hood, which I do not normally use with my other lens's.

Is there anything I should be aware when using a lens hood?

My guess is it should be fine to leave on all the time, however it will only be a benefit when it is used in strong sunshine.
Thanks for any advice, Alex

I wear a camera over my shoulder all the time and sometimes bash it off things if I am not too careful. The lens, if it didn't have a hood, I am sure would be totalled by now - the hood helps protect the front of the lens from impact too.

Wear the hood all of the time, particularly as you are hiring, and take care of it.

The only minor thing to be aware of....If it is a petal hood, make sure you have it on correctly, or on a wide angle lens you will get spectacular vignetting.

the canon 24-70's hood is actually a very good one as it does the job at all focal lengths as the lens works the other way round to normal zooms (fully extended = 24mm) so you shouldn't have any issues with vignetting.

Doesn't hurt to leave it on all the time, I tend to.

See this thread re lens hoods, post #12 http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=249442

The hood on that 24-70L is unique, as mentioned above, because the lens extends in the reverse direction to most other lenses inside the hood, effectively creating a zoom lens hood that should be optimum at all focal langths. Except that it won't quite be on a crop format camera, only on full frame, because of the narrower field of view.

I've had some odd vignetting on my 24-70 recently - its vignetting in two opposing corners but not in all four. I can only assume this is the hood but am at a loss as to what would be deemed the correct fitting?? Any advice appreciated ... maybe I should really dig the manual out and check in there.

Put it on straight!

as well as keeping unwanted glare out and protecting the lens itself it can also help prevent rain getting on the front of the lens providing its only a light shower.

I leave the hood on all the time too, but I believe it can cause a shadow if you use the built in flash with some lenses? It hasn't happened to me, but I'm sure I've read a warning about this somewhere.

True, if you're shooting close with a hood on, using the pop-up flash. It can happen with bigger zoom lenses too, even without a hood. It's because the flash is too low.

It's definately on straight, but it appears to possibly rotate too far if i put it on with the writing on the hood face up. Hence my question 'what's the correct way to fit it?'.. was just wondering if i was missing something or being thick about it.

Yes can cause undesired shadows if used with built in flash, but as others have said decreases chances of damage to lens from knocks etc
