Lens Hoods

Was trying to get the search function working but it seems to be unavailable at the moment.

I'm after a Lens hood for my nifty 50 and my 17-85mm, but dont want to pay top canon prices for them. Do the cheaper Jessops/Ebay hoods do the same job?

Arguably as long as you get the right one for your camera, its just a bit of plastic, so yes, they should do the same job (ive never compared thm, but my unofficial one I used does the job fine, plus it was a 10th price of the canon one!)

I've got the Marumi hoods from 7dayshop for all of mine. They cost peanuts compared to the genuine canon ones, and do exactly the same job.

I have a rubber hood on my nifty. It only cost a fiver from Jessops and does the job it needs to do. It doesn't give the same protection from knocks as a hard plastic hood but it blocks stray light reflecting in to the lens.

You should buy L lenses they give you one for free

I purchased a petal hood on ebay & it was actually pretty good quality for under a fiver!

Canon must make a fortune out of selling their hoods :thumbsdown:

I got a couple of hoods from ebay, they screw on like filters though, not like the other lens hoods.

Have an awful feeling that I chucked the one I lost, out, thinking it was some random junky thingy that one of the spogs left over when they were here....damn.

Canon ones are normally lined with felt inside, and it is IMPORTANT to minimise any reflections.

Would anyone know if aftermarket ones have felt, particularly the one for 85mm f/1.8 please?

They dont even give you white ones though!! tight gits :shake:

If you buy an aftermarket one, make sure the inside is a matt or flock (the genuine Canon ones are flock lined) finish so you don't get any reflections.

Well the rubber should be ok then. Failing that, I'll add a bit of flock myself!

There is a site which you print out any lens hood to try, not sure you one with the 1.8, so print one out and see if it makes a difference.
