I'm looking at picking up a Canon 55-250mm lens this week and would also like to get a hood for it.
What I want to know is whether there is any difference between the genuine Canon ones and the aftermarket ones?
There seems to be quite a difference in price with non-branded being as low as a fiver against Canon being £20, but is there any extra benefit in paying more money to get the Canon one?
 
Not to sure but i am guessing its the build quality. You might be fine with the non branded ones and that they do the same job but might be a bit cheap and break easy, not to sure i have only got ones that have came with the camera.

Best bet is if your ordering of the net is see if you can find one in the shop and see the quality first.
 
The none Canon ones will do the job no doubt, but will probably be a bit flimsier. Also Canon ones are lined on the inside with matt felt to cut down reflections, whereas the cheaper one probably wont be.
 
You are basically paying fror the felt. Built quality wise wont be much difference as they are all plastic.

None of my genuine Canon ones are felt lined as they are all older mark II's (matt black) those designated III (3's) are, IIRC felt.

I see the value of many Canon lenses vs 3rd party options, but I just can't see the extra value in their hoods. I have a 85mm f1.8 and a nifty 50 both with pattern hoods and they're spot on. My other lenses are Sigma and Tokina which all come with hoods anyway :thumbs:

I've had both the non and the genuine hood for my daughters 55-250 lens, there is not much difference in the 2, but I managed to get a genuine one at a very good price.

Having compared the 2 side by side and being very critical, the Canon one fitted and clicked into place on the lens better than the 3rd party one and it felt more solid (probably slightly thicker hood).

Having been able to compare the 2, I personnaly would buy the genuine one over the 3rd party, but it would depend on price difference at the time cos, there wasn't that much difference in quality.
