Lens making funny noise

Hi

My new lens arrived today from Warehouse Express. Sigma 18-125mm OS.

It seems to be working ok, however whenever my camera is on and this lens is attached it makes a noise, sounds like the motor maybe almost like an electrical burning noise? I'm assuming its not meant to make this noise.

Tried my other non-OS Sigma 70-300mm lens and its fine, also fine with my Canon 18-55 kit lens.

Any ideas? I will be calling WE tomorrow about this anyways.
 
thats the image stabilisation steve nothing to worry about nikon vr whirs then a clunk
 
no questions are silly Steve I had to ask when I had VR lenses and as for it not wanting taking shots thats not the lens I dont think but I may be wrong I dont know canon

Does it still make the noise when you switch the OS off? If not, then it's just the OS in action. If it does, then there is something wrong.
 
I don't have the sigma OS lenses, but from the Canon lenses, I would say that the noise should be relatively quiet.
If I hold my canon 30cm away from my head, I cannot hear the IS in action (and I have pretty decent hearing). On the lenses I have, it sounds like the camera is focusing, but quieter (to give some idea of the type of noise), you know it is the IS by the fact it continues once focus lock is in place. I don't think it should be sounding like electrical burning (do you mean fizzing?)

Also, and it might be different between the canon and sigma, but on the canon IS lenses, the IS only turns on when you are about to take a picture (on the 400d, hold the shutter half-way, and the IS turns on, and you get focus lock). This is done to conserve battery power. I would be surprised if the Sigma has the OS on all the time (and I would consider it personally a mark against me getting a sigma lens with OS)

It should, coz the focus ring is rotating to try to focus ;)
 
I'm with Coldpenguin on this one. If it is the IS/OS in action it should only function when the shutter is half pressed. My Canon 55-250 is my only IS lens and the IS is very quiet on it, certainly doesnt make a fizzing noise and only comes on with the trigger half pressed, otherwise you'll be going through batteries like no one business!

What happens when it wont take the shot? Does it have focus lock?

But then it should stop once a focus lock is achieved (I am assuming here you are on 1 shot or AI-Focus, not servo).
If it is continuing, and failing to get a focus lock, then I think that the focus mechanism might not be working properly.
 
It focuses ok, it just makes a horrible fizzing noise constantly. Still to check if it does with OS off, at wrk the now. The noise will disappear eventually after a wee while, before the camera auto shutsdown after no use for a few minutes.

When it doesnt take a shot, it has acheived focus lock but then on full press of the shutter button it doesnt take a photo, but if i change position slightly it does.... its weird. Will just play around a bit.

Ah, well that doesn't sound very good...... I don't have the lens but if you can get someone to verify that theirs doesn't do that, I'd send it back. The focal length locking switch might not work at all focal lengths, mine only lock to keep the lens at it's minimum length, see if that's the case!
