Lens mounts, changing lenses etc

Hi all,

Have had my D300s a few days now (funking love it by the way), and since I've had it I've found myself chopping and changing between my 16-85mm, and Tokina 50-135mm quite regularly, just to play around with settings, take test shots etc, all in my lounge.

What I've found though is that I've spent so much money on the camera (even though I bought it used on here), and love it so much that I'm quite precious about it, and the lenses too. When I change a lens, I obviously have the camera pointed down at the ground, and I find I never get the two white dots nailed first time and worry that re-adjusting all the time will somehow damage the lens mount and/or connections on the lenses themselves.

Are lens mounts and connections pretty hard wearing? Am I worrying over nothing?

Sorry for the ramble. I just love my toys and want to make sure I'm not doing anything to harm them

I think both of those are metal mount which as classcams says is the best tough option so no problem there and no doubt you'll get into a more settled useage pattern with less changes. Don,t worry about it!

Thanks guys, yes, they are metal mounts. I just worry about scraping them around against each other, and doing any damage. But thinking about it, that's what they're designed for so I should stop worrying really. Just getting precious about the camera and my lenses

Don't worry about it - they're designed with the ham-fisted in mind...

Metal mounts are hard wearing, but it still makes sense and costs nothing to handle everything carefully.

Oh yeah, don't worry, I'm completely careful with all my stuff. Probably a bit too careful if that makes sense, which is why I started this thread in the first place. I think I'm too worried about the effect changing lenses often has on the mounts and connections, and what sort of effect it has if I have to wiggle them around a bit before I nail the 'two white dots'.

I think I need to worry less. I'm always concerned about where I put my camera down, and if it takes the slightest knock I'm complete paranoid. I had it slung over my shoulder the other day as I walked out the door, with my 50-135mm lens on, and my fiancee walked into the lens as it was sticking out, and I gave her the dirtiest look, asked her how hard she walked into it, and gave it a thorough checking over.

I think there's something wrong with me! :bonk:

Agreed, I dont think you will wear them out, you will replace the body and the lenses will still keep on going, even the plastic ones last for years (as long as they are not abused) ;)

No - you're just a bloke - my GF crashed her enormous bunch of keys against the side of my Mustang on Saturday and she got 'the look' as well...
Even 'funnier', I was watching her walk up in the wing-mirror as she was juggling jacket, cell-phone, handbag, drink bottle, sunglasses and keys all at once - and I was sat there thinking "which of those is going into the paintwork when she tries to get in the car - bound to be the sharpest/hardest...".:gag:

That's the thing about girls' much-vaunted multi-tasking abilities - it just means they're a bit rubbish at everything...

Love it! If they just tried to do one thing at once, or maybe two, like us men, they'd be perfect. Like us men. We can put all our concentration into one or two tasks and do them fine. They put all their concentration into about 7, and something's bound to go wrong. Multi-tasking=accident waiting to happen.

However, my fiancee walking into my lens would have done absolutely no damage whatsoever. Yet I still got precious about it. Whereas yours probably did do a bit of damage (?) to the car.

No just a nut-tightening clank...she did look rather sheepish for a while...lol

and if anyone would wear them out, it's Arkady...

seriously, it's fine...watch a professional work and you will cry over how kit gets treated lol...

Is it wrong to have feelings of love towards a camera and various lenses?

No, but I would caution against acting on those feelings - I bet s***k's a bitch to get off a sensor!

To quote from 'The Truth About Cats and Dogs'

It's ok to love your pets, but you shouldn't LOVE your pets...

However it is OK to love your car...
Just watched 'Love the Beast' - Eric Bana's homage to his '72 Ford Falcon XB Coupe...

Clarkson says it's OK and that's good enough for me...lol

I'm the same....I check the surface very carefully before I put down my body and lens. Even have a soft cloth for them to sit on the shelf in my room. don't even get me started on how I look after the mobile...:D
