I am thinking of investing in a canon lens for sport, football mainly, would ye recommend a 300mm or a 400mm 2.8, at the minute i have a 100 - 400, but not good enough on wintery afternoons / evenings..

Yes.

Since you have a 100-400 you'll know what 300mm and 400mm feel like on your camera, so you should be able to work out which of these suits your needs best. Personally I'd go for the 300 because (a) it's MUCH cheaper and (b) it's MUCH smaller. I find the 300 hand-holdable but the 400 isn't.
