As a novice photographer who only takes pics for a hobby, could anyone reccommend a suitable zoom lens to fit my Canon 1000d eos rebel. The lens mount is described as EF-S, is there an adaptor available I can use with other makes than canon?

what do you want to take pictures of with the new lens ? wildlife ? motorsport ? people ?
do you have a rough budget in mind ?

You can get adapters to use other types of lenses, but canon have a pretty wide range so I doubt if you'd need to go this route (unless you have some old lenses already?), I think you'll lose auto focus using adapters to other lens mounts.

You can use EF fitment lenses as well.

nothing specific, mainly holidays, places of interest, touristy pics etc.

a 55-200mm is an areag lens people get, there is aslo a 70-300mm. seens as you have a canon i would say get the 55-250mm, i dont own a canon but when i was going to buy one i tried it out with that lens and it was really nice.

tamron 18-270 - great do it all lens - beleive there's a;so one going in the classifieds at the moment

canon 28-135mm f3.5-f5.6 IS USM is a cracker for around £230!! and it will pop straight onto your camera as will any EF or EF-S canon lens.

I used to have a 1000D, I love that camera. I would recommend 70-200mm F4 IS, it gave my photos a big wow factor.

It depends on your budget, but if it's a small budget the 55-250 complements the kit lens very nicely indeed and for the money is a cracker. Any Canon, EF or EF-S lenses will work, as will others with an appropriate adapter (I've used OM fit lenses) but you lose AF, lens control and possibly a number of other functions.

thanks guys for your help! while I'm here can anyone explain to me the advantages of using a hood on a lens

Hoods stop lens flare

and they look cool!! :D
