lens options

Hi all,

Recently got a D5000 with a standard 55-200 lens and want to add to my camera bag.

I would like to do some macro shots and it seems that the Tamron 90mm lens is the one to go for. I am also looking for something a bit wider than my 55 - 200. I am looking at the Nikon 18 - 55 which looks like the perfect companion.

Are both the lenses above okay for a keen newbie?
Are there any to avoid or any that particularly shine?

From what I have seen the Tamron 90mm is superb.

I have the 18-55mm and was surprised by the good image quality, it was better than expected. When i had canon gear I sold my 18-55 straight away but I'm going to keep the Nikon version.

Have you considered Nikon's 18-70 instead of the 18-55 :shrug:

Its a cracker of a lens..... (18-70 that is) of the two I would recommend the 18-70 - having owned both at some stage...
 
Thanks for the replies. The Tamron macro stays on the list then and I'll do a bit more investigation on the 18 to 70.

I'm nervous about going the secondhand route but would like to save a few quid. Are secondhand lenses generally a safe bet? Apart from obvious signs of external damage, I'm not really sure what to look for.

The 18-70 is indeed a superior image quality lens but does not come with image stabilisation (VR) so you have to be careful when taking shots.
