Dont know if this has been asked before but here goes
why is it that the rrp of canon 600 f4 is 11k and the nikon version is 7k ?? Are us canon boys getting ripped of big time or are the lenses 4k better, im not thinking of moving over to the dark side as i have had canon gear since 1979 but the price differance is leaving a nasty taste in ones mouth

You should try looking a bit further afield for your prices. I know they're OOS at the moment but you can get the 600 f4 a bit cheaper here http://panamoz.com/index.php/lens/canon/canon-ef-600mm-f-4l-is-usm-lens.html and they are really good. I ordered a 60D yesterday and I'm tracking it for monday delivery. I know where you're coming from though. I think most of the problem is a UK thing, not just a Canon v Nikon thing.

Erm..it's out of stock, and it's the mk 1?
 
The Canon 600 Mk II is so expensive because it's a brand new design. It's not actually available yet and most retailers are asking for the official recommended price, or close to that, for pre-orders. They're maximising the profits they can extract from the people who *must* have this lens: habitual early adopters, people to whom £11000 is no big deal, and professionals to whom the weight saving compared to the Mk I is a big deal.

The Canon 600 Mk I used to be available for about £6500, which was about 10% cheaper than the Nikon 600 VR. They're very comparable lenses and I think the price difference simply reflects the fact that Canon tend to be a little cheaper like-for-like.

The Canon 600 Mk II is significantly lighter than the Mk I, and that would justify some sort of price premium. But it will be a year or more before prices drift down to the long-term stable level where it's fair to compare with Nikon, and it's too early to guess what that will be. £8000? £9000? Could be.

I did put that it was OOS in my reply, but they're not always OOS and where in your post did it mention MkII. You said the 600 f4, I'm only trying to help, but I'm not a mind reader lol
 
As Stuart said really, with the new MKII being a much better design in both IS and weight it's not suprising a brand new lens would be at a premium price.

I guess it's sort of the same as the new Canon 5D MKII at £3k, it'll drop over the next year of sales as all things do in life.

Actually the RRP of the Nikon 600mm is £9078, so it's selling at £2000 / 22% below RRP.

The RRP of the Canon 600mm Mk II is £11299 and all retailers are still charging that, or a fraction less.

Unfortunately they are always out of stock. Canon launched the Mk II versions of the 500 and 600 in February 2011, and the plan at the time was that they would be available from mid 2011 or thereabouts. And then straight after that they had an earthquake and tsunami. So production of the Mk II lenses was disrupted, but they'd already stopped making the Mk I lenses. It's been virtually impossible to buy a new 500 or 600 for a year now.

Sorry, Stuart, not meaning to be snippy, but actually I think the mk1 is no longer being made, although I'd be the first to agree it's an excellent lens...I have no intention of upgrading my 300 2.8 mk 1 to a mk 2.

I think some of the alterations are for the video boys anyway.
