Hi ladies and gents, I was wondering if anyone could advise me please?

My 70-300 lens has gone "a bit dodgy". I recently used it and tried it on both cameras. Nothing wrong with the images bit, but especially when it's on auto-focus, when I turn the camera on or off, it makes an awful grinding noise. It's only that lens and happens on both of my cameras.

Any idea what I can do? Can I do anything myself or do I need to get it fixed - and if it's the latter, can anyone recommend anywhere please?
 
My old sigma 28-300 can be a bit graunchy sometimes. I reckon specs of crap get in under the zoom or focus collars.

If the 70-300 is the cheap sigma one then it is possibly on its way out as the gears are made of butter. The earlier sony dslrs were worse for gear stripping and using any in fast AF mode rather than slow would almost guarantee to break them. It's probably not worth the expense of repairing.
 
TBH, your thoughts on it are pretty much the same as mine.

You're right, it's the sigma lens. They're not exactly great....good, ok, but not great. I thought that something may have got in the lens somewhere - but I know that it's not through over use that whatever has happened to it has happened, cause it's my least used lens, lol! I have used it mostly on the Alpha 350 though. :/
 
Keep using it until it breaks. If you don't use it much it could be ages! I think the AF motor is slightly stronger in the 350 than the 380. One of the sigma lenses I bought had a warning about it in the user leaflet.

Tamron do a very cheap 28-300. I got one for £70. I got mine as a back up to my sigma in case it ever dies somewhere important. I find the zoom collar locks sometimes and it won't move. Then it's fine for the rest of the day.
 
It's the Sigma gears that are breaking not the camera.

Rather than repair it as it will only go again how about putting the money towards an upgrade?
Tamron 70-300 SP USD is under £300 as is the new Sony 55-300.
 
TBH I wanted to upgrade it anyway, but have other priorities ATM. (Baby due! ♥)

Think I'll save for the sony one, - I have one tameron lens and TBH I don't really like it, I much prefer the sony lenses. It's a 28-200 tameron I think.

I agree though, unless it's mega cheap or a DIY job, it'd be uneconomical to repair it, especially for how often I use it.
