I have just purchased a brand new Nikon D5100 and a couple od S/H lenses one being a Nikkor 55-300 VR which is fine.

The other lens a Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II LD IF I am having a problem with. When I focus with the viewfinder it auto focuses no problems. If I change to live view and use the screen the lens will not auto focus unless you change to manual focus.

Has anyone got any ideas whats wrong before I return it?

Thanks Andy

I don't have a nikon 5100 but on some dslr's you may need to use the af button on the camera body to focus in live view mode. Check your manual. Does the 55-300 focus okay in live view?

Older third party lenses do not always communicate correctly with newer bodies, which is probably the case here.

Nikon understandably do not test third party lens compatibility when releasing new models.

Tamron can probably upgrade the chip to enable AF in live view.

+1.

Spoke to Tamron who said they can re-chip it to make it work with the D7000 for £40.

Since I never use live view - it doesn't really bother me. :)

Thanks for the replies guys at least I know why now dont think I will bother as I will be using the viewfinder mostly if I do use the liveview then I will manual focus.

My main concern was that the lens wasnt faulty being secondhand.
