I've recently purchased my first decent lens, the Canon 50mm 1.4. Some people have suggested I purchase a UV filter to protect the front element. Looking at the Hoya website it suggests there's no negative impact to the captured images from their UV filter, but it seems counter intuitive to me to cover up an expensive lens glass with a comparatively cheap filter.
Is having a filter simply for protection considered standard?
