this has probably been asked a million times before but, i want to get into nature and wildlife, with a bit of indoor sports photography thrown in, i am torn between the ef 70-200 f2.8l of the 100-400 f4-5.6.
i will be using the lens on a 7d.
which one?

Thanks

Ian

For nature and wildlife the 100-400 is a corker. It won't be much use indoors though. The 70-200 won't really be long enough for nature and wildlife but will be good for indoor sports! You could get the 70-200 with a 1.4 converter. Unless you get the 2.8 IS Mk 2 and a 2x converter.

i've just taken delivery of the non is 70-200 f2.8, and i am really impressed with it. the autofocus is near instantaneous and very accurate.

if 200mm is long enough for you, this lens will not disappoint.

i do have a 70-200 f4l which is a good lens, so my options are keeping this and going with the 100-400, or a 300f4is

You will need a focal length of 400mm for wildlife, but f4 is not fast enough for indoor sport. Very difficult choice.

i like the idea of the zoom range over a fixed focal length, but is there any differance optically?

I've had a couple of 100-400s and I really liked them and had no problem with IQ. However,IMHO opinion straight out of the camera images from my 70-200 f2.8 is are sharper and the AF is faster. As others have said the 100-400 is fine for a lot of wildlife photography but I think you will struggle indoors with it

I had same quandry , settled for sigma 120-300 f2.8 and stick on a 2x converter for wildlife , not ideal but cheaper than canon equiv . bit of a heavy beast though , saves going to gym:)

The 300 F4IS is a cracker of a lens and will happily take a 1.4 TC - giving you a 420mm @ F5.6 with IS lens, when needed, although as others have said, the F4 is probably limited use for indoor sports though.

It's nearly Christmas - buy both !!
