I have a Canon 60d camera with 3 relatively cheap lenses and am looking to add to my collection :-)

If money was no object what lens would you recommend to me to take photos of freestyle dancing, bearing in mind it can be quite fast action, indoors and usually in pretty poor light?

Then......what lens would you recommend for all of the above on a budget?

.......then...... would your recommendation be suitable for still portrait shots of the dancers and/or group photos?.........

Well if you haven't already got one a a 30 or 35mm prime lens is a good place to start and will not break the bank.

How close are you to the dancing?

I can be as close as 5 feet to the dancers and as far as 30ish feet?
 
At 5 to 30ft on APS-C for dancers I'd be going for a fuller shot probably full body and some context but you aint going to get a full body shot at 5ft without having a wiiiiide lens :D 17 or 18mm-70/85mm or something like that would be ok for shooting slightly further away, maybe? That sort of range may suit for group shots and portraits too. If the light level is low you may want something with a wider aperture than a standard zoom gives.

One of my current lenses is a 17-85 usm f/4-5.6 and it seems very hit and miss with the shots that I get off it?

The range is great on it but the shots seem a little soft focussed.
 
I used to have one of those. Mine was sharp enough but it's downsides were distortion and CA. I gave mine away and replaced it with a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 and I found it to be a much better lens but it lacked the IS and USM and the longer range of the 17-85mm.

If you can live with a 17-50mm there's the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 and the similar Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 to consider and there are (AFAIK) IS versions of them now too.
 
I'd go for the Canon 17-55 2.8 IS, not crazy money, maybe a touch short, but otherwise pretty flexible and fills the brief imo
