I am keeping an eye on 2 D70's on ebay at the moment - one comes with a 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO Macro Telezoom lens and the other with an 18-70mm auto zoom.

Which would be the better one to go for as a beginner purchasing her first D-SLR? :thinking:
 
The 18 - 70 would be the better option, very good quality kit lens :thumbs:

The 70-300 is too 'long' for an only lens, the 18 - 70 will give you more options from wide angle to a short telephoto.
 
they are 2 very different lenses. to start with the 18-70mm will be your best bet as it will cover more types of photography rather than just having a telephoto zoom lens.
 
Yep, 18-70mm. Very good lens indeed and will work extremely well with a D70 which is a fine camera to begin with.

If it's your first DSLR the 70-300 might be a bit of a handful - it's not exactly small when used at the long end of the zoom range. You'll probably find the 18-70 is a more useful choice anyway (depending on what sort of photography you want to do).

The D3000 is a newer model than the D70 - it's got a 10.2MP sensor as opposed to the D70's 6MP. Here's a reliable review: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond3000/page26.asp (see pages 1-25 as well).

The eBay D70/18-70 combo is probably a reasonably good buy, but personally I'd rather go for brand new kit. If you're at all unsure - my advice would be don't rush in, do more reading up and go to a shop to try out the D3000 in the flesh.

The 18-70 advertised in Jessops has been out of stock all over for ages.
If I were buying a D70s ( Oh, I just did!) I would think about £180 or so for a good one ( low usage) is right. 18-70 lens for about £120, used, or less if your lucky. 70-300 ( get the APO or the APO DG if you can), around £100 used.
D70s and 18-70 would be your best bet if its less than £300. The D70 / D70s has inbuilt AF motor so you can use a wider choice of lens in the future. D3000 has no built in AF motor so limits your choice of lens ( only lenses with AF motors in will AF)
The D70s may only have 6.1mp but I doubt you will notice the difference between the 10mp of the D3000.
I sold my D300 a while ago, it was all getting too expensive. I've come back to DSLR's again and bought a D70s. I dont really notice the difference in image quality from my D300. D70s its a superb handling camera, dont discount it because the technology is old. Ten to fifteen years ago, technology advances were huge, recently, its difficult to tell what the differences are when something new comes out.
