Lens Question

Hi,

I currently have the 70-200mm F4L IS and the 18-55mm kit lens. Obviously their is a massive difference in quality, and it bothers me that when i use the kit lens i'm just not getting that same level of quality as i do with the 70-200, so i want to upgrade...

I use the 550d at the moment, and would like a general everyday lens that will provide the wider angles that the 70-200 can't manage.

Now i've been looking at the 24-105mm F4L IS and this is affordable for me, but in terms of image quality, am i going to see a big difference in quality and sharpness between that and the 70-200?

The 70-200 is incredibly sharp and produces amazing images, but i'm wondering if i've kind of spoilt myself if that makes sense? I want a lens thats gonna be as sharp, or not far off from the 70-200, so will the 24-105 meet my expectations do you think? or will i be disappointed?

Any other lens anybody can recommend?
I don't want a lens that only works with crop sensor bodies though, as i'm hoping to upgrade the camera at the end of the year to a full frame, if money permits that.

24-70 f/2.8! Loads of options - try the copy you intend to buy before actually commiting yourself and even the Sigma options will surprise.

Before you make a decision though, try as many options as possible. I'm not familiar with the Canon line-up but I know enough to think that there shouldn't be any Lemons...

Going for FF soon? Perhaps you will but untill then if you get the 24-105mm f4 you'll be using a lens that has reach but a restricted wide end and of course you're stuck with a relatively bulky lens and stuck with f4.

Personally, with an APS-C camera if looking at zooms (well, actually, I probably wouldn't be...) I'd be looking at a quality designed for APS-C 17-50mm f2.8 even if it was only for a months use. You could buy used and sell when/if you go FF. It won't have the reach of the 24-105mm but it'll obviously be wider and crucially it'll be f2.8 instead of being stuck with f4. I bet it'll be at least as sharp as the f4 zoom too.

I really don't see the attraction of big and heavy slow zooms for use on APS-C cameras when there are IMVHO much more attractive 17-50mm f2.8's - if you must have a zoom.
