Hi there

I know that there is no true 'multi purpose' lens but I'm trying to get the closest thing, as I am not the calibre of photographer who could benefit from having a lot of different lenses :)

I do mainly landscape work, the occasional portrait , and quite a lot of low light work from high places.

Imagine that price is no obstacle, weight isn't a problem and all you care for is image quality.

I use a Sony a350.

Based on that what lens type, or model would you recommend to me?

What do you mean by 'low light work from high places?' Would the camera normally be tripod mounted for these shots?

Yes, I would usually have the tripod.

Assumming you don't need a fixed aperture for the low light work due to using the tripod, and also that these are within the focal range you would need to use, I'd consider the following:

Tamron 18-50mm F2.8 - fixed aperture but less focal length than the other two.
Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 - Good range, excellent image quality, decent price.
Sony 16-80mm F3.5-4.5 - Excellent image quality, better range, but will cost twice as much as the other two.

I just bought the Sigma myself after many excellent reports on it, some of them from members of this forum - quite a chunk of lens, but the quality shines through.

None of the superzooms will give you the image quality you are looking for, although I can understand the temptation of them - my pet hate is changing lenses but I also know it's a necessary evil if you want quality and speed. :p
