Hi all,

I've currently got a D90 with a 18-105 VR Lens, as well as an 80-200 2.8 AF-S and I frequently borrow a friends 50mm 1.8.

A couple of shoots recently with a friends 24-70 2.8 AF-S have really got me wanting some better glass. Unfortunately I cannot justify spending out for a 24-70 2.8 AF-S as at the moment photography is just a hobby.

So, can anyone recommend an alternative? bearing in mind that I do eventually want to go to FX so have not been considering DX lenses.

I've heard about the 24-120 F4 and 24-85 2.8-4, does anyone have any experience of these?

For reference, I would use this for general portrait and a walkabout lens, effectively replacing my 18-105, except for landscape as I prefer the 18mm wide-end.

Thanks in advance

If the 24-120 F4 is on the radar, then money wise you could also look at the 28-70 2.8 AF-S. It's the predecessor to the 24-70 and every bit as good, in fact having owned a couple of each, I think I actually prefer the 28-70 marginally.

Alternatively, how about a prime?

my walkabout lens is the nikon 24-120mm 3.5-5.6G lens. Infact it is the one I rely on most on holiday. Yes it gets a bad press, mainly from those pixel peeping people, however as far as i am concerned it suits my needs adaquately. Cost around £480 but may be found cheaper on you know what.

Thanks for the advice so far, now looking at the 28-70 2.8, pricing doesn't look too bad
