Pulling my hair out here. I've decided I'm going to specialize in babies and children so need a lens to cover this. I'm currently on a crop and will probably be working in clients homes mostly.

Could it be time for you to splash on the 24-105 Dean?
Or possibly the slightly more expensive 24-70 2.8?

If it were me I would look for the faster lens.

How much cash are you looking to spend matey? Also, is second hand ok?

Are you likely in the near future to move to a full frame camera?

If so smoothedit's recommendations make sense.

If you plan on staying on crop then take a look at the EF-S 17-55 f2.8 IS. I have one and it's a very good lens - it's not too hard to find a good second hand one between £500-600. Alternatively you could use primes - a 50/1.4 and/or 85/1.8

24-70 would give you flexibility and great images... I use a 50mm 1.4 for 90% of my baby shots, a 70-200 2.8 for about 8% (when outdoor) and a tamron 28-75 2.8 for the remainder if i need wider.

Ideally I would like to add the 85mm 1.8 to that.

These are all options and I do plan on going FF next year. Atm I need to sell to buy so my 10-22 is outta here. I'd guess 600 ish is the limit but would love to stretch to a 24-70

24-105 is a decent one lens solution which will cover most indoor shoots but I think that as soon as you go outdoors its too short so the 70-200 becomes IMHO essential.
I've gone from 24-105 and 70-200 f4 (as you know :) ) to 24-70 and 70-200 f2.8 is with absolutely no regrets now I've got used to the different handling of both lenses compared to the lighter f4 lenses using them on FF and 1.3 crop. Of the shoots I've done in the last week i've used the 70-200 90% of the time. I've got an 85mm 1.8 somewhere although I hardly use it. It just doesn't suit my way of working

What sort of setup are you intending on using, do you need faster glass than f2.8?

What about some primes, could get both these on your budget
Canon EF 50mm f1.4 USM and Canon EF 85mm f1.8 USM

Thanks again, guys.

Paul, I had the 24-105 at the top of my list as I shoot mostly strobist stuff (to answer Pete), but I'd also like to do some more natural window light and reflector stuff too.

I've thought about primes - why would I need a 50mm f/1.4 right now though with an f/1.8 already? - but more the shorter end then longer 85mm end simple because of space on a crop. 50mm is plenty long enough for most I'd have thought.

I guess the simple solution would be to buy a 17-55 f/2.8 while I'm on the crop body and then move it out next year?

I guess the next question is is it sharp wide open?
